Barcelona are hoping to get big offers for three players in the summer
Speaking on La Porteria, journalist Alfredo Martinez has shed some light on the transfer strategies that Barcelona are planning for the upcoming summer window.
It is no secret that president Joan Laporta and manager Xavi Hernandez are planning a few big moves, especially for a new top-notch centre-forward. And for that to happen, they will need to make room on the wage bill and generate funds from player sales.
Fringe players like Martin Braithwaite, Samuel Umtiti, and Oscar Mingueza are expected to be offloaded at the end of the season to achieve that. However, that is unlikely to be enough for the scale of business that the Blaugrana are planning.
To that end, some big departures could be on the cards. And, Martinez has now claimed that Barcelona are expecting to get big offers for right-back Sergino Dest, along with the Dutch duo of Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay.
De Jong’s future has become a major topic of debate of late, with fans split over whether to keep hold of the Netherlands star or move him on in the summer. While Barça have not put him up for sale, they will listen and study any significant offers that come in for the Dutch ace.
As for Depay, the 28-year-old is likely to fall further down the pecking order at Camp Nou should a new attacker is signed in the summer. Having already seen his game-time take a hit, the ex-Olympique Lyon ace could decide to move on, with the Catalans hoping to get a big offer for him.
Earlier on Tuesday, reports insisted that Manchester United were planning a double swoop for Depay and de Jong and would be willing to shell out €100 million for the Barcelona duo.
Regarding Dest’s situation, contrasting reports have been doing the rounds in the media for some time now. While the 21-year-old showed signs of improvement in the latter half of the campaign, injuries continue to thwart his development.
And, with the club likely to invest in a new right-back and extend Sergi Roberto’s contract, there could be no room for Dest in the squad. The USMNT star has admirers in Italy and could fetch a decent sum considering his age and potential.
It remains to be seen if Barcelona are able to cash in on the aforementioned trio in order to generate funds that can be invested into the squad in the summer.
